About CMA

CMA exists to maximise the effectiveness of leadership, governance and management in Christian churches and organisations. We believe the cause of the Gospel is advanced when these operational issues (governance, finance, HR, strategy, stewardship, communications, fundraising, accountability etc.) are done with excellence, and are fully enmeshed with an active Christian faith. Our Mission / Vision / Values can be downloaded here (1-page PDF).

We are a small organisation with a team of five (3.1 FTE), working from home offices in Melbourne, Tamborine Mountain QLD, and Brisbane. We operate like an association, providing events, training, networking, niche resources, publications, services and referrals for our 1750 paid members and 10,000 email subscribers. We have a strong sense of calling from God in what we do, we love the team we work with, and we are enormously privileged in serving a simply amazing membership community of church, ministry and business leaders around Australia.

Despite being a small organisation, we have punched above our weight for much of the past 20 years, but this has meant that we've had to be more versatile and do more ourselves. Now, in our 20th year, we are poised to grow significantly, and ready to add some more specialised in-house expertise. We are truly excited about the potential of the opportunities that lie ahead, and are praying for God to add to our team.

The Opportunity

The Communications and Marketing Officer role will combine the opportunity to help us substantially reconfigure our existing communications systems, with the need to roll-up-the-sleeves and get print and digital communications out the funnel and into the hands of our audience. A detailed Position Description is available here.

We don't have a central office, so much of the role will be work-from-home. In an idea scenario, you would be in South East QLD where you could accasionally work alongside existing team members, but for the right candidate we would be open to considering remote work from other locations.

At CMA, we are committed to providing a safe, flexible, fun and fulfilling working environment, and we consider that our staff are more than just people who DO the ministry - they are PART of our ministry! The role would involve occasional travel to key CMA's public events and staff gatherings, a commitment to some ongoing professional development, contributing to the overall development of CMA's strategies, and getting to flex your creative communication skills in a warm and supportive environment. Your skills and diligence will have a serious impact on the effectiveness of Christian organisations around the country, and if you've been looking for an opportunity that allows you to achieve real Kingdom outcomes from a communications & marketing skillset, this may be the role for you!

Note: We are looking for someone to actually do the day-to-day production and execution of CMA Communications, which is why we have framed this as an Officer-level position. For the right person, we would be open to considering a more advanced / experienced kind of role, so long as the applicant was still willing to accept the hands-on responsibility for day-to-day execution.

Essential Qualifications / Skill / Experience

  1. Proven track-record in writing a range of communications pieces.
  2. Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline (media, marketing, communications, journalism).
  3. Microsoft Office 365 skills and ideally skills in other production-type software (eg desktop publishing, audio / video editing etc).
  4. Two years' experience in a similar kind of role.

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will

  • Have a desire to use their communications & marketing skills for the furtherance of God's Kingdom.
  • Be familiar with issues relating to church and ministry operations.
  • Be able to express ideas and concepts articulately in written form, and be able to enforce branding and more subtle tonal consistency across a full range of publication types.
  • Be fully conversant with social media and modern communications developments and practices, yet retain a respect for the place of 'old-school' communications where appropriate.
  • Be willing to continually nudge and assist existing staff to lean into contemporary ideas, strategies and practices.
  • Be data-literate and have a good understanding of how databases interplay with communications and marketing.
  • Be adaptable and flexible in a fairly lean environment, where we don't have the higher-powered back-office engine-room of larger organisations.
  • Be productive and accountable in a mostly work-from-home environment, able to focus, deal with distractions, and get real work done without the luxury of a centralised office infrastructure.
  • Be willing to reliably do the 'grunt' work of producing and sending emails, publications and communications on an agreed schedule.
  • Enjoy interacting with existing staff and stakeholders, and proactively contribute to a fun, spiritual and productive workplace culture.
