Schools Ministry Group (SMG) offers ongoing pastoral and practical support through chaplaincy, Christian education, and wellbeing services to school communities in partnership with the combined Christian community and partner organisations. SMG is the employer of more than 350 employees including 300 Pastoral Care Workers in SA Government schools and is an approved Chaplaincy Service provider of the South Australian Department of Education and Child Development (DECD). 

The Federal Government allocates funding to SMG via the National School Chaplaincy Program (NSCP).  Additional chaplaincy hours are funded by denominational Community Service Groups and additional fundraising activities through SMG.  SMG is the largest chaplaincy service provider in SA.

Reporting directly to the Board, the successful candidate will be an inspirational, innovative, and transformational leader in their contribution and execution of the organisation’s strategy.  You will transform the organisation to reach its full potential by developing new initiatives, leading a committed team and stakeholders on a journey of positive change and growth, influencing others to embrace and implement new Christian inspired initiatives, in a changing demographic landscape. 

There is immense potential to leverage SMG’s services given the issues facing students, young people, and their families, particularly with the increased prevalence of mental health and societal challenges. Aligning your ideas to SMG’s strategic goals and priorities, you will have a demonstrated track record in driving strategic opportunities and initiatives to create new income streams, diversifying the organisation to new levels. 

Candidates will be appropriately qualified and experienced senior executives with the commercial and political acumen to lead and grow the organisation to ensure it is financially sustainable, separate to government funding. A genuine affinity with key stakeholders is essential as are influential leadership skills, sound financial acumen and highly developed communication abilities combined with warmth, empathy, authenticity, and good character. 

 

Selection Criteria 

The incoming CEO will require knowledge, skills, and experience in: 

  • Transformational leadership
  • Inclusive leadership to attract and retain a diverse workforce and understand the importance of diversity and culture. Workforce and succession planning at a high level and the important role people play in organisations. 
  • Proven expertise and success in identifying, creating, and implementing diversified, profitable income streams and demonstrable capacity to grow an organisation into a sustainable entity
  • Commercially and politically savvy, operating at a strategic level
  • Evidence of strategic thinking, planning and execution
  • Governance, including reporting to a Board, risk and compliance, and financial accountability for the organisation
  • Stakeholder management and the capacity to build networks, enduring partnerships and maintain relationships
  • Understand the power of research, evidence, and data to advocate for and inform decision making and credibility in the business model
  • Influencing and implementing change, executing ideas, strategies, and new initiatives
  • Financial management and reporting against budget
  • Commercial and political nous and oversight of funding arrangements; a track record in Government relations will be highly regarded
  • Excellent communication skills to articulate and influence the vision and purpose of SMG
  • A personal and active commitment to the Christian faith and values
