Children’s Program Educator & Facilitator

We are seeking a motivated, energetic, and caring person who can work in a collaborative environment, who has a heart for children, is non-judgemental, organised and flexible.

Benwerren aims to strengthen families, by supporting women and children in need.  We do this by providing practical support in the form of ‘time-out’ in a peaceful and caring environment, while ministering to the physical, educational, emotional and spiritual well-being of women and children.

Benwerren operates on a Christian ethos and aims to share the love of God, through practical support in a safe environment.

 

About the Role

The role of Children’s Program Educator & Facilitator is to support children staying at Benwerren in its various programs.  The children will be across a mixed range of ages and come from vulnerable families who may have experienced trauma, some with additional needs.  Our programs are delivered with a strengths-based and trauma informed approach.  The worker will be expected to develop, oversee and facilitate children’s activities, be responsible for the safety of children in their care and liaise with the mothers of the children.

Benwerren’s children’s programs include:

Kids Play – a program which currently runs Thursday to Saturday (2 sessions a day), provides time for children to be supported through play, learning and exploration, while mothers rest.

School Holiday Program – 5x 6-day Holiday Programs for mothers with children during the school holidays.  It provides an adventure program for the children, pampering for mothers and family occasions with the aim to create lasting memories and strengthen family bonds.

Boys & Girls Weekends – 2 camps a year for young people aged 10-13 years who have stayed at Benwerren with their mothers during the year.

Benwerren is committed to being a Child Safe organisation.  All staff are required to maintain a child safe culture.  Benwerren has zero tolerance for child abuse.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, oversee and facilitate the Kids Play Program providing stimulation, diverse opportunities to learn and promote children’s development, inclusive of children with additional needs.
  • Organise activities that allow children to learn about the world and explore interests, utilising the surrounding natural environment.
  • Watch for signs of emotional, behavioural, or developmental problems in children and bring any concerns to the attention of the parent and staff as required. Refer if necessary.
  • Support mothers in their role, provide information and referrals where appropriate.
  • To share the Good News of Jesus with children and their families using bible stories in a relevant and interesting way for children being sensitive to parental preferences and respectful for those with differing spiritual beliefs.
  • Model and guide positive communication and behaviour with and for children/parents.
  • Reflect and promote Benwerren’s Christian values (See Faith Statement and Constitutional Objectives).
  • Keep records of children’s progress as required.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to the Child Safe Standards, Benwerren Policies and Procedures, and safe work practices. Exercise respect for Benwerren’s vision, values and goals in all aspects of performing your role.
  • Attend and participate in biannual inhouse training. Provide training to staff and volunteers on the needs and responses of children in a Benwerren setting.
  • Work with other workers as part of a team.
  • Attend staff meetings and Committee meetings as required.

Key Attributes

  • Ability to relate and communicate well with children and their parents: An ability to read and/or tell stories to children, ask, and answer questions, and give instructions clearly and in a way children can understand. Able to report back to parents and Benwerren staff about the children in your care.  
  • Good knowledge of child development.
  • Patience: An ability to respond calmly and patiently, with flexibility and love for children.
  • Stamina: Able to keep up with the energy levels of children, and manage physical tasks associated with setting up play equipment and/or activities.
  • Attentiveness to the needs and safety of children.
  • Ability to work well as a member of the Benwerren team.
  • Respect for confidentiality.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively.
  • A passion and understanding for mothers and children in need.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Education (or relevant industry qualifications)
  • Experience in implementation of learning support programs
  • Experience working with children with additional needs including ASD
  • Hold a current First Aid/CPR certificate
  • Hold a current working with Children Check or obtain this before commencing.

Hours & Reporting

32 hours a week (4 days a week with possible increase)

Can include some weekend work if available.

Commencement October 11, 2022.

This role reports directly to the Coordinator
