Role Overview

As an Outdoor Education Group Leader, you will design and deliver immersive outdoor learning experiences, ensure participant safety, and model inclusive, high-quality practice. You will collaborate with fellow staff, mentor volunteers or junior leaders, and contribute to continuous program improvement. This is a hands-on, dynamic role suited to energetic educators, outdoor enthusiasts, and natural mentors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver engaging outdoor education sessions (hiking, paddling, surfing, campcraft, navigation, environmental science activities, adventure-based learning) across a range of settings.
  • Adhere to daily itineraries and risk management processes, brief participants, and implement emergency procedures as needed.
  • Adapt activities for participants with diverse needs to ensure inclusive, meaningful learning.
  • Foster a positive group culture, support skill development (teamwork, communication, problem-solving, resilience).
  • Manage logistics (transport, gear, food, accommodation), maintain equipment, and complete required program documentation.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and supervise Junior Leaders or volunteers in leadership activities.
  • Model Leave No Trace, environmental stewardship, and cultural respect; integrate local knowledge and inclusivity into programming.
  • Maintain up-to-date first aid training and agency-required certifications.

What We’re Looking For

Essential

  • A committed Christian willing to support the ethos of CYC and who views their work as a way of bringing glory to God
  • Experience in working with young people in roles such as education, outdoor education or chaplaincy.
  • Organizational, problem-solving, and multi-tasking skills; ability to prioritise under pressure.
  • Communication skills; capable of working within a diverse team.
  • Valid QLD driver’s license or ability to obtain one.

Desirable

  • Qualifications in outdoor leadership
  • Knowledge of local areas and ecosystems
  • Proficiency in specific skill sets such as mountain biking, paddling or surfing.
